~AWinter Mantel~

YAY!  It's Friday, I love Friday.  It's the beginning of the weekend and my husband works from home, so I have the car.  I am going to go out in a few minutes and brave the -22 C (7 deg below 0 F) somehow it just doesn't sound very cold when it's converted to Fahrenheit.
When I lived in Northern BC, I remember one Christmas that was 50 deg below 0 F, now that was COLD!  About 20 years later, when I was a single mom and I delivered bundles of the Edmonton Journal to several of the small outlying communities, there were several days when it was 40 degrees below 0 F.  A couple of well meaning people on my route warned me that I would die if I "hit the rhubarb" (went off the road).  I simply had to go though, it was my job and my kids had to eat.  I prayed and sang praise and worship songs on those very dangerous days as I drove, and I know the angels were around my car for the eight or nine hours that it took, because I felt at peace and I had no problems, whatsoever.

Like so many, after Christmas I felt a longing for a very simple decor.  This is my "simple" fireplace Winter mantle.

I put my barn pictures on the mantle, I love barns.

Simple decor on the hearth...

...and there you are, the chairs are pulled up close to catch the warmth from the electric fireplace.  There's a warm ruffly throw to wrap myself in.  Staying warm is what it's all about.

I hope you are staying warm and cozy, too.
Warm hugs,

Cindy
The verdict is in, these pretty birds are Bohemian Waxwings.  Thank you to everybody who helped me identify them, I appreciate all of your comments, always.

I love your story and you were a strong woman to do what you did to care for your kids. Those birdies with the red berries are beautiful. Isn't it amazing they can stay alive so small in such cold temps.

It looks all warm and cozy. I'm cold in our house too but it's in the 50s outside! It's about as wintery as we can get this year. Anyway, your winter mantle looks beautiful in its simplicity..and the barn pics are lovely!

I've experienced those temps last winter in Yellowknife, but only had to walk 3 block to our apt.
You are one tough lady and the Lord saw you through.
Your mantle just draws you in, inviting one to grab a cup of tea and a good book to cozy in!

Boy those chairs looks so comfortable! Plus they are in such a cozy place, I love that! I am glad we don't get that kind of weather here! I do remember skiing in minus temperatures when I would spend time in Vermont. But not any more!

Brrrrrr Cindy, I bet living in a place with very cold temperatures causes one to really appreciate and savor the warm summer days. There is a song that says God is good, he's good all the time and I'm so glad He is good to watch over us and give peace in troublesome situations. I like your pictures of barns. They look very nice on your mantle. Have a warm, safe and blessed weekend, dear friend.----------- Shannon

I love your fire. So incredibly cozy. It's finally turned very cold here and we're getting a few inches of snow. Not enough to be snowed in though. :o) Your mantel is perfect...but I have thought that of every mantel you have shared! Enjoy your weekend...Ann

Cindy your fireside chairs do look inviting! It must have been tough to drive those newspapers all over the countryside fir that many hours, You must have been so glad to arrive home in the evenings. It's warmed up here a bit and next week will be even better.

The hearth is "perfect"! I'd like to bring my book with me, settle in one of those chairs, and wrap myself in an afghan and read, read, read.

I can't imagine being so cold! I wonder how you kept your toes and fingers warm while driving those country roads in -40C temperatures.
You are a brave and resilient lady.
I love those peaceful country scenes above and on your mantle. Little birds are sweet.
Thank you for sharing the warmth of your home and your spirit.

I love your decor, Cindy. I like simple!!

Anything below 0C is f-f-freeeezing to me! It's unusual in the South of England to drop below that for more than a couple of days.

You sound as though you were an awesome mum - making hard decisions on your own can't have been easy- but look at you now: Superwoman!!
