Homemade Soap and a Tuquoise Bathroom to Match

Good Friday morning to all.
It's pretty cold here once again, it has dipped to -30 Celsius. I don't know if it's windy or not. I've been inside for the last two days with a nasty cold.

I want to post about the homemade soft soap that I made for only pennies a container.

I found the recipe on Pinterest and it actually works!
I will make my own from here on out.
Several of my blog friends have been blogging about living frugally and I've been doing my best to be frugal.
I really dislike the thought of wasting money.

Here's my recipe:

1 bar of soap, grated (I used Blue Zest because that's what I had, Ivory does NOT work, I tried it first)
10 cups water
1 tblsp. glycerin

Grate your soap up into a dutch oven, add water and glycerin,
heat on stove until soap is completely dissolved. (It was blue at this point from the blue bar of soap, so I added a couple of squirts of green Palmolive dish soap and came up with a lovely turquoise soap that suited me.)
Mix it up gently with a whisk and let sit to thicken up for several hours or overnight.
Pour into containers and enjoy! For the price of a bar of soap and a little bit of glycerin I had three quarts of soft soap.

Go HERE for more information and clear instructions.
HERE is another recipe that I found on my friend Faye's Pinterest board.
There are lots of recipes out there, this is the one that I used and it worked very well for me. I looked at several recipes and read peoples thoughts on them before I chose one, though.
I would suggest that you do the same.
There are lots of recipes for every kind of cleaner on Pinterest.
I am realizing that I pay WAY too much for cleansers. I will be making more of my own from now on.

I painted my bathroom recently...

It's tiny, so I have turquoise and white in there, no other colour.
It helps to keep it simple, I think.

Next up is painting the woodwork.

 ...some whimsy, cats playing jazz...

It just keeps snowing...

The snow banks are getting higher and higher, my husband says we will have to find a place to take the snow to if it keeps snowing...there's no place to put it behind our garage or in our parking place anymore.

The birds certainly seem happy, the bushes in the back are always full of them and I can hear them singing inside the house there are so many of them. What a delight to hear them chirping away!

            Can you see them?

Thanks so much for coming by and leaving a sweet comment.
You make blogging worth while.
Have a good weekend!

Hugs, Cindy

I need to get outside, there's still more shoveling to do. It snowed day before yesterday all... day... long! It's beautiful and sunny at least!

What a charming post, Cindy! I love your idea of making your own soap, your bath is very cozy and your house in the snow... as you know I live in the south of Spain so I'm not used to snow. Great and cute post.

I will have to try this when I run out. I've been doing my own laundry soap, and I love it! Your little bathroom is very pretty as is the snow. We have bare spots now, for the first time in over a month.

Hi Cindy! It sure looks cold up your way! I'm sorry you're not feeling well and hope you'll be feeling better soon. Now I may have to try to make the hand soap. I've made some with Dawn dihwashing liquid and hot water and it works too but I noticed it was a little drying on my hands.
Love your sweet bathroom, the colors, that plate and the adorable cats! :)
Stay warm and feel better soon.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Hi Cindy. Thanks for sharing your soap recipe. There are lots of great money saving ideas out there. I love the colour of your sweet little bathroom. Very pretty. You do have lots of snow. We lost most of ours yesterday when it got up to +13. It was just like a spring day but the wind was really crazy. Enjoy the weekend. Hugs, Pam

Love the colour of your bathroom walls. It's very similar to what I've been thinking of painting of putting on my bathroom walls.

We had a fair bit of snow then heavy rains and now new snow, but less this time. Very cold again too. Your bathroom is lovely in turquoise and white. I think my ensuite bath is just about the same colour.

Hello Cindy!
I wonder where all that snow goes when it melts! Must be very soggy around the house for a while. Looks beautiful on such a sunny day. I would enjoy hearing the birds singing too:)
Well done to make your own liquid soap. The colour is perfect for your fresh and pretty bathroom.
Happy days,

I too have a cold and wish I didn't. I love the bathroom color, it seems a really pale turquoise--so serene. And the soap to match! Your ground should be well hydrated when all that snow melts. It looks beautiful!

I love the colors you have used in your bathroom--really pretty and it makes you feel good to look at it. I am afraid to make my own hand soap because I tend to break out if it isn't really mild. I wonder if it would have trouble with mildew if you make your own in a humid environment like the South where I live. Perhaps not!

Cindy! Get well.
We can't have you with a nasty cold.

The soap? Sounds easy enough. I've been wanting to try this. Where did you buy your glycerin? Around here...I'm guessing we'd have to get it at A.) Wal-Mart B.) a pharmacy or C.) hardware store?
I really don't know. Is it costly? And is this something you can use the left over soap slivers for? I AGREE WITH YOU...I spend way to much on cleaners. Hoping to curb some of that this year...starting in FEB.

Sorry for all the questions.
Your bathroom is so lovely. I changed my bathroom this time last year, from 'reddish' colors (coke theme) to Blues, turquoise and white. I love it.

As to the SNOW! I live in Texas as you know, so we just wait for it to melt( which isn't long) but I never thought about 'where to put excess snow' !!! That is a funny concept to me. Not funny to you, obviously a nuisance...
you make blogging fun, and enjoyable too!
Stay warm, my friend-- and please get well. Pat

Don't you just love Pinterest? I learned how to make foam hand soap out of regular gel soap...saving us some money too. I love it. Your turquoise bathroom looks great. Please take care of that cold and stay warm. Wishing you a wonderful new week.

Much love,

Poor Lady, I hope your feeling better soon, It's never fun to have a cold.

I never would have thought to make my own soap but that seems very easy. I may just have to give it a try.

Hi Cindy!

I can't imagine how cold it is there...brrr. I hope the worst of it will be over soon and you get less snow and higher temperatures. I also hope you feel better soon!

I love the turquoise color of your bathroom..very pretty! The liquid soap recipe is wonderful. I don't live close to stores any longer so it will be helpful to have recipes on how to make my own products when I need them. Thanks for the link to your friend's Pinterest board.

Brittany said... looks COLD up there! I hope you're feeling better. I just love the little bathroom, what a happy little space - I'm quite partial to turquoise ;) The soap sounds so easy, I think I need to try that!

How neat! Your bathroom looks very pretty & cozy. Gosh, I could not imagine getting that much snow here in Arkansas!?? ....You have to designate time to shoveling it away? Wow...MUST be a lot of snow. 3" of snow is a lot to us! Also, thanks for stopping by my blog! Feel free to link up to MoonSHINE Monday!
