A Visit to the Mennonite Heritage Village

I'm back!
It's been a busy summer and so I've not been blogging at all.
But, my grandkids talked me into it today.

I've been looking after my oldest grands for a few weeks now.
I went to our Church Camp for a wonderful and inspiring week and then I did some respite work for a foster family who needed to get away for a family vacation.
That week was an exhausting, fun, sad and happy time.

Today I'll show you what I did with my grands a few weeks back.

We visited the Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach, MB.

Here Jonathan is behind the teacher's desk in an English school that the Mennonite children attended in a nearby town many years ago.

Jonathan was having fun.

Here I am with a statue of a woman, commemorating the hard working Mennonite women of the past.

Naomi standing outside of one of the log homes.
This house had a barn connected to it.
Because of the harsh winters that farmers endure in Manitoba, having the barn connected to the house meant that during blizzards the farmer did not get lost trying to get to or from his barn.
We were concerned though, that the barn might make the house smell a bit like the animals.
Not too appetizing, eh?

I had to get in on the fun, too!

This pig is pushing the handle that turns on the water with his nose and the water was dripping into his mouth.
I thought this was pretty funny.

As you can see we had a lot of fun.

An old Summerfelder Mennonite Church, Jonathan was trying out the pulpit for size.

He'd like to drive away in this beautiful old car.

A view of the beautiful grounds that the Village is on.

We are having a beautiful summer here in Manitoba, it's been hot with some rain, but not too much.
What kind of summer are you having?

I will do my best to get around to visit you in the next week.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment!

It's good to hear from you, Cindy. That certainly looks like an interesting place. I was raised in the Evangelical Mennonite Church - not quite so "Mennonite" as some, but definitely a big part of my heritage.

We just returned from a couple of days with my daughter and her family in Chicago--always quite a change from small town Indiana :)

Today we're enjoying unusually beautiful weather - very cool night and pleasant day with another 24 hours similar to these. Sooooooooo thankful!

I love historical villages like this, Cindy. They are so interesting and so much can be learned from the past. It looks like your grands enjoyed themselves and I like the photos of you with the statue and on the tractor. I hope your busyness will ease up now so you can enjoy the summer. We've been having heavy rain here the past hour but the sun is breaking through now. I guess it's making up for the 2 weeks of sunshine we had recently and the wells are sure getting topped up again. Enjoy your summer Cindy. Hugs, Pam

Pioneer villages are one of my most favorite places to visit.
It looks like you all had fun.
Although I don't think I'd like Jonathan as a teacher!!
You sure have been busy, but it all sounds good.

It looks like you had a great day, and a busy week too. We often brought our kids and my nieces and nephew to Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto, just as our mother brought us. Lots of fun memories and so much to learn. We have also been twice to Upper Canada Village near Ottawa/Kingston.

Hi Cindy, a wonderful post, just the kind of thing I like doing, visiting historical museums and sites. Looks very interesting. Glad you enjoyed a busy but fun week with your grandchildren. We've had amazing weather in the south of England, day after day of really high temperatures. It's cooled down somewhat this week, but it's still lovely and warm and perfect weather for all the children who are now enjoying summer holidays.

hello Cindy!
This trip with your grandchildren looks like such fun.
I love seeing all the old buildings, and the farm life...That Pig! LOL...
We live in a moderately populated Mennonite area-- there is a church not far from us. Beautiful. Very hard working people. Industrious.
I usually visit their local bakery for fresh produce, dairy, and baked goods! Rather than drive 20 miles to town.
have a great week...Pat

Your grandchildren are are adorable! It looks like you all had both a fun and educational day visiting the Mennonite Village, Cindy. It is always interesting to see how people lived in past eras. That school room looked very much like the one I went too!

The dress you made for your sister looked beautiful! Congratulations to your niece on her wedding.

I enjoyed seeing the village with you and having fun with your grand children. Love the pig pix of him getting water and the windmill.
Great picture of you at the sculpture.
My brother and his family are Mennonites in Powhatan county va.. I like the church and all that they do for community. I do like the fresh foods and home made breads that is ground from whole grains. I will have to show them your blog about the village there.
Happy Sunday - Betsy
