Hoppy Spring to You!

We're having a Hoppy Spring day here at my house.

It has been going above the freezing mark outside recently and

the ---- is melting very nicely...

...and inside things are hopping!

You may have noticed these little bunnies in previous posts...

...but here's somebunny you haven't seen before.

Little Miss Bunny was handmade by my oldest daughter about 20 years ago and she has been sitting in storage until recently.
I brought her out and realized that it was time she had a new dress...

Yesterday I made her a new two tone turquoise dress.
I think she looks very sweet in it.

The sun is shining and she is soaking up the rays...

I hope you're getting some 'rays' at your house!

Today I'm starting my spring cleaning and re-painting of the bathroom, one coat wasn't enough, it needs another one, so here goes again...

Thanks so much for all of the birthday greeting that you left on my last post, they made my day! They really did, it's been a tough winter and everything has seemed so much brighter since this last weekend and you are part of the reason for that.
So thank you!

Thank you also for coming by today and leaving a nice comment.

Hugs, Cindy

It's My Day

Hello my friends.
I'm joining Random Five once again.

1. Today is my birthday!
I turned 55, and will now be eligible for a discount on meals in some restaurants.
(There's got to be an up-side somewhere.)
My sweet son, (the bricklayer) and his family took me out for dinner last night for the best ribs and barbecue ever!

Last Years Celebration

2. I'm a decorator "wanna-be". I have always loved a well ordered, beautiful home. I crave beauty.
As far back as I can remember I have been trying to beautify and rearrange accessories.
Imagine doing that in a home that has eight people living in it and four of them younger than myself.
When I was a child, my dear mom didn't mind clutter and didn't have the funds to beautify anything.
I can remember rearranging stacks of magazines and cleaning off end tables when I was very, very young.

3. I enjoy Starbucks coffee every day with half and half in it.
We buy the two pound bags and grind it fresh for each pot.
YUM!

4.I LOVE cleanliness and a fresh smelling home.
(As I'm sure most people do.)

5.I love vintage items and most anything that reminds me of simpler times.

6. I love hugs!!!
(This one was free, because this is a random FIVE post.)

Check out A Rural Journal for more Random 5 Friday posts.

Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for coming by.
I love reading your comments.

I will be by to visit you later this weekend, we are now in the middle of our church minister's conference and I won't be around for a day or so.

Big hugs,

Cindy

~First Day of Spring~

I hear that today is the first day of spring!
I took my camera with me for my walk and this is what I saw:

The skies are blue and it's -18 deg. Celsius with a windchill.
It feels like -30 when the wind hits you!

Despite the temperature, it's a beautiful day.
"Hope Springs Eternal", so you've been telling me.
It's true, and thank you dear friends for the encouragement.

Some of the older homes along the river.

I enjoy walking in the morning time, there's not a lot of traffic and very few people around.

I live in a beautiful city where the weather is simply not predictable.

Last year at this time the temp was +21 deg. Celsius.
Next year could very easily be like that instead of cold like this year.

Emily Dickinson penned these words:

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

"HOPE" is still singing in the lilac bushes behind my house.

These photos are from around my little house.
I wanted you to see our snow banks.
It's hard to clean up the snow now, because I have to throw it so high.

Six inches of snow fell on Sunday and Monday.
So far this year we've had a snow fall of more than FIVE FEET.

So, here's to spring and here's to the hope that tomorrow will be warmer and greener.

Have a wonderful day, my friends and thank you for coming by!

Spring + Colour + Shopping + Home + You

Interesting title, huh?
You're probably wonderful "what does that mean".
I'm joining a little meme today called "Random 5 Friday" at

Spring

Please forgive me, but I am feeling a little crazy today.
It is NOT spring-like outside
but rather, it is -14 deg. Celsius and with wind chill it feels like -30 deg. C!

I am praying that spring is right around the corner, though.

Here is the one sign of spring that we've seen so far,
besides a few water puddles, that is.

Those icicles prove one thing...the sun has been warm enough to melt some of the snow on the roof...and there's a ton up there!

Colour

I am craving colour so strongly!
I completely finished the crocheted rug and have put it back on the kitchen floor.
It feels good to see it there.

I put it over on the other end of this area and I'm thinking I need to make another one for that area in front of the window.

Shopping

I went to one of my favourite thrift shops yesterday and found this piece of fabric.
Five yards of it and for $7.99!
Aren't the colours perfect?

It's an indoor-outdoor fabric and my mind is reeling!
I'm wondering, should I make slip covers for my dining room chairs?
OR
Should I make more pillows for this room?
OR
Should I use it in my screened in porch?

So many wonderful possibilities...

I have searched our fabric store for one piece of fabric that has turquoise, red, yellow and a bit of green in it and come up empty every time.
Then I found it in a thrift store.
Who knew?!

Home

There is truly no place more wonderful than home and I'm very grateful for a warm and cozy home to snuggle up in during a long, cold winter.

You

I am also very grateful for YOU. My friends that I have made around the world mean a lot to me.
Thank you for coming by here week after week and leaving a friendly greeting each time.
It does mean a lot to me.
I am trying to stay busy with projects and cleaning.
But life does get pretty lonely.

Thank you for being a friend.

Hugs, Cindy

A Look Back at the Eating Area

Happy Wednesday!
Recently, I was looking back at some of my first blog posts.
I was a little surprised to see what my kitchen eating area looked like when we first moved in.
How easily I forget!

This was over four years ago.

The walls were originally a dark maroon-ish red.
This was a DARK depressing room!

The first thing we did was paint the walls a butter yellow, before our furniture even arrived.

The above photo was taken before we did a complete kitchen renovation.
I had forgotten how much of a change the new cabinets made.

The round table was too large for the small room, so we found a smaller vintage table at a junk store.
We gave it a makeover and used it instead.
And the changes continued...

The yellow walls and white cabinets were nice, but I really wanted a colour change...

Last February I painted the kitchen walls a turquoise oops paint that I found and I removed the drapery.

Next was the light fixture that I found on sale and a garage sale table was installed. The two old chairs may receive a makeover here very soon.

And this is what it looks like today, lighter and brighter.

I hope you enjoyed my little exercise in "looking back"!

I still have the vintage table and large chairs along with the light fixture from the second photo...soon I will show you where I have installed them.

I truly hope you are enjoying a beautiful spring day.
It's sunny and -22 C this morning!
That's way below seasonal norms, they say.
Oh spring, where are you?

Thank you so much for coming by!

HUGS, CINDY

Black and White Photo Challenge

I am joining A Personal Photo Challenge for the Black and White Photo Challenge today.
Like many, I love black and white photos and I also love Lake Winnipeg.

Here is Lake Winnipeg in black and white, taken with a Nikon D80.

And now in colour.

There is a wharf that extends out into the lake to make a safe place for boats to dock. Very strong winds often hit this huge lake, some say to be the 7th largest in the world, and the boats need a safe place to dock.

This is the wall surrounding the docking area, in black and white.

These photos were taken at Lake Winnipeg last September, on a very stormy day.

And now in colour.

See how high the water was flying, way above the wall.

Here I am in black and white the day after the storm, peering over the wall. It was still windy, but nothing like the day before was.
There are still a few white caps.

~the boats at sunrise~

My husband took all of these photos.

As soon as the ice is off of Lake Winnipeg, I want to go out for a visit.
I miss the water.

I hope your weekend is going well.

Thank you for stopping by.
See you next week.

Stop by A Personal Photo Challenge to see more black and white photos.

I'm Dreaming of Warmer Weather...

...just like Winnipeg Marchs I used to know.

Where the eaves troughs drip

as the sun melts the snow,

And where the pretty birds sing,

and the temperature rises to ten above and not below.

Where lilacs blossom and bees begin to buzz,

Manitoba Legislative Buildings

And friends don't mind visiting us

here in the frozen north.

These photos were obviously not taken recently.

In fact, umpteen more inches of snow fell overnight!

My back is sore from shovelling (and falling) and I am

suffering from cabin fever!

That's why I dug out these pretty spring time photos,

I need them.

So, today I'm dreaming of spring.

How about you?

Please tell me if you have blossoms and bees,
I'd love to hear about them!

Thank you so much for coming by, I always enjoy your visits and I will do my best to get over to see you, too.

Cindy

CRAVING COLOUR

Everything is still so very white outside.
Every day the sun shines brightly and I look out to see icicles drip, drip, dripping...
And inside I'm craving colour.
Bright red, turquoise, purple and even yellow.

This very colourful afghan is one that my aunt croqueted many years ago.
She made it for my mother and I ended up with it when my dear mom passed away.
I love the pop of colour that it adds.
It makes me smile every time I look at it.

Sue, a blog friend, made the darling little tea cozy.
Tea is an important ingredient in helping one get through a long winter.
And, it's been a very long winter.

Red is so very cheerful and who doesn't need a little cheer.

Colour continues in the living room and even further.

I hope you are surrounding yourself with things that make you feel good, it's important my friend.

What have you done to help you get through the winter?

Thanks so much for coming by and leaving me a word of cheer.
I really appreciate you!

Have a good weekend.

Cindy
